We come here usually on the weekends for dinner and although they've been getting busier these days, they do their best to get you seated right away!
For food, we order our usual which is "Mata cuatro and chuleta al pastor" with the delish tampiña mezcal drinks. I mean COME ON, TAMARINDO AND PINEAPPLE, to die for.

From authentic Mexican dishes to Latin food with a twist to the best cocktails (ever)! The food is extremely savory and you know they're made fresh. I have luckily tried almost all dishes and cocktails on the menu with some of my favorite being the vegetarian nachos, Steak nachos, shrimp tacos, churrasco, fajitas, and huevos rancheros. Favorite cocktails include passion fruit margarita and both coconut margarita/mojito! All ingredients used for cocktails are fresh! They squeeze their own limes, use fresh fruits blended in the kitchen, and fresh jalapeños (for spicy Margarita). The staff and owners are very hardworking which is shown through every aspect of this restaurant. I can go on and on about Cascalote! 5/5. read less

East Harlem isn't usually a destination where people think of for a food adventure, since when you're in the neighborhood the vibe it gives off is definitely differently from places like the East/West village or Williamsburg for instance. But I am so glad that we stumbled upon this family owned restaurant that served some incredible, authentic Mexican food on the corner of 103rd and 2nd avenue. Came here at 11am on a Sunday for brunch in a party of 2, and we were the only table that was served for that particular morning. I ordered the Cascalote Burger ($20 - this is INCREDIBLE) and my brother ordered the Eggs benedict ($20). Total bill came to ~$50 tax and tip included.
For a start the burger - I must say I've had a lot of burgers in NYC, and this burger ranks as one of the top three that I've ever had in NYC. The potato buns were nicely toasted, with a thick beef patty cooked medium rare that was seasoned with a lot of Mexican spices, so it really brought out the meaty flavor of the patty. In the burger, they had a really thick chipotle aioli, slices of avocado, melted cheese, and seared onions which really added more flavor to the burgers. Oh, and this thing was pretty big, I was so full after finishing just the burger! What an incredible fusion approach to a burger, and I think if I am craving for a burger I have my spot at Cascalote now!
My brother also enjoyed his eggs Benedict, and highly complimented the sauce and the carne asada that it came with.
This place is incredible, and I hope low key family places like Cascalote can deserve the attention because they serve some incredible food, and I hope with more restaurants like Cascalote they lead East Harlem into the next food mecca of NYC! read lessJonghan L.12/08/2019Are You Really Looking for that Next Outstanding NYC Restaurant Discovery? The owner-chef uses fresh Mexican ingredients to create a variety of OMG! flavor-experiences. Rather than ordering from the ample menu (which could mislead you into thinking this is just another good Mexican restaurant), we asked the chef to make us an array of his favorite items. He introduced us to 7 sample portions of plates that stopped our taste buds in their tracks as we all mumbled, "OMG, what is this!?" I'm not exaggerating. The food was not only outstanding, it was constructed on each plate as a work of art (I think that's called 'presentation'), and the ingredients & preparation explained to us in detail by our waitress (one of the chef's daughters).
While every selection was blue-ribbon, the two I loved best: hamburger slider made from short ribs, sirloin and skirt steak on a Brazilian cheese bread roll with pineapple aioli. And the other was a taco. But not the taco you just pictured in your mind. This one contained octopus breaded in panko with a ginger/honey aioli and topped with spicy homemade kimchee.
How do I remember these details? Because the food was so different, so creative, so goooood, we took notes.
OK, I'm done with this review now. I really liked how the waiters kept checking up on us. While we were looking at the menu (a QR code you scan with your phone) I kept drinking my water because of the heat the waiter came out to look outside and noticed my empty glass immediately went back inside the restaurant and came out with the water pitcher, little things like that I notice and appreciate because sitting outside under the sun can be a bit uncomfortable so I like how attentive the staff are. The place was pretty busy but are food came right away. I had the salmón on top of zucchini noddles it was one the best salmons I had in a while. So much flavor. My fiancé loved his dish I forgot what he got but I had some and it was so good. We had margaritas which were delicious not too strong just right. The sweet arepas, the candied walnuts in the kale quinoa salad, the salmon dish (that isn't on the menu) but is served on a bed of sautéed kale and maduros, the sizzling fajitas that always make me jealous when I see someone else eating them, and the nachos that have the perfect amount of every single ingredient on every single chip is just the most outstanding food experience ever. We walked in around 6:20 on a Saturday evening, and got seated with no wait. At first I was disappointed by the limited number of vegetarian main dishes available, since reviews made it sound like this place had good veg options: nachos, fajitas and the waitress said they could also make vegetarian chilaquiles even though it wasn't on the menu. I was going to get fajitas, though it sounded a bit boring, but the waitress said that the nachos actually make a great main dish. They came with beans, corn, cheese, garlic-y spinach, and some other veggies. I agreed that it made a fabulous main. It was very filling, not too oily, and really unique. The spinach was especially delicious. We also split a side dish of maple maduros. The maple flavour was pretty subtle, but they were good. It seemed like a serving was approximately one large plantain. We didn't get drinks, but they looked pretty exciting. It's not a cheap restaurant, but I think it'd make a good date spot. We couldn't overhear the conversation of the neighbouring tables, but didn't have any issues hearing each other. My dinner companion got shrimp tacos and said they were good. Her portion was much smaller than mine. read less

From the time we arrived, until the time we left everything was simply incredible. We arrived as a group of 3, but we were expecting one additional person to arrive and the place was quite occupied at the time, but we were promptly acknowledged, greeted, and asked to sit at another table until a table for our size was available. This was great quarterbacking by the hostess, who ended up being our everything... Literally and Figuratively... Adriana was so remarkable in so many regards!!! She was pleasant and personable, but for the overall steal... HIGHLY knowledgeable on the products, menu, and complete dining experience as a whole. Kudos to her!!! She guided our menu selections to a well anticipated and wonderful mid-day service. Everything we had was wonderfully seasoned, cooked to perfection, and the presentations were nothing less than Top Chef!!! :)It's without a doubt, rare, to find extraordinary dining service in NYC, but Cascalote Latin Bistro absolutely raised the bar and got this one right.... It's not often I rave about service and dining experiences in NYC, rather quite the opposite, but I just had to share this experience. I promise for the life of me, I will never visit another Mexican food restaurant as long as I live in NYC. This is for sure my go-to spot and there's only about 3 of such on my list. I'm simply delighted to have been recommended to Cascalote Latin Bistro and was truly fortunate to have Adriana as my waitress. I can't wait to go back to try some of the other menu items! The food is delicious. Everything, really. Most recently I had the steak fajitas and everyone was reaching for them. We shared an order of guac and basket homemade fries to start - both excellent. The food is upscale and inventive but authentic.
I also had the mezcalito, a spicy-rimmed, mezcal cocktail with cucumber, and they do not skimp on booze, people. I was feeling good when I left. They also have a great happy hour every night, Monday to Friday, and I will try to take advantage of that when I can. Whenever friends visit, I usually bring them here for cocktails and snacks.
The food is top-notch, but the family who owns the restaurant are wonderful, kind and so accommodating. We came to celebrate our nephew's 16th birthday and they made the night special, pulling out the sombrero and an insane sparkler candle to celebrate him properly. We have two (very busy) small boys and the ladies up front could not be sweeter. The restaurant has a lovely, welcoming family vibe.
Lastly, we had the tres leches cake for dessert. It was so good that I ordered a whole one to take home to my family for the Easter holiday. We could not stop eating it.

I can eat their vegetarian nachos all day everyday! They combine spiraled zucchini, kale, spinach, on individual tortilla chips. A large amount too, they are very liberal with the toppings making each nacho a heavenly experience.
They're service is wonderful, our waitress explained everything very well on the menu and was very attentive. Ambiance, comfortable, and done tastefully, not tacky at all with the decorations.
I was very impressed with the bathroom, clean, and different soaps/lotions to use. I think that shows a lot of integrity about a place.
I don't recommend the vegetarian fajitas, I was super disappointed, I was expecting them to be as fantastic as the nachos and other dishes I've had. But it was totally over priced and didn't come with any rice or beans. The dish mainly consisted of large onions, and a few slices of zucchini. I didn't even eat it. I was really wishing that dish to be a staple for me.
They also have to make up their mind, whenever I go in one waitress always lets me change a dish to a vegetarian option and another insists the dishes can not be modified so I'm limited to what I can order when she serves me.

We sat, the waitress gave us menus and told us her favs! She raved about the Heuvos Rancheros, Chilaquiles or the Mata Cuatro. I love Latin food so I wanted to start with a staple, I decided on the Huevos Rancheros my friend picked the Chilaquiles. Since it was brunch we had to try a cocktail, our waitress suggested the coconut mojito. Beautifully prepared with fresh mint and creamy coconut it was so tasty..... if I would have closed my eyes I would have been on a beach! Our food arrived and I was pleasantly pleased at how colorful and beautifully plated our dishes were - Plating is such the foundation of a dish, it's allll about the visual. First bite, slight crunch, evenly spiced, I'm picky about my eggs so I asked for over medium instead of sunny side up..... I'm getting there lol. My steak was cooked to a nice medium temp and I completely devoured it all! We chatted for a bit after our meal and had one more coconut mojito. Most of the time they are overpriced and basic. Absolutely loved it. The quality is superb, presentation, service overall a 5/5. My friends and I ordered 4 plates to share but I'll be honest I didn't want to hahaha--that's how damn good it was. You HAVE to order the tres leches pancakes: fluffy, beautifully executed, and overall, mad good. My fav dish was the huevos rancheros. We walked in on a weekday evening while exploring a bit of Spanish Harlem and found an empty restaurant, but decided to give it a try. So happy we did as I was in the mood for some cocktails and authentic Latin eats. Cascalote did not disappoint.
A family owned little gem that is a perfect addition to this neighborhood. Chill vibe, fun, good music, and a welcoming feeling. Tiny Mexican restaurant that is nicely appointed with a cozy attitude. The waitress offered some terrific suggestions, and also told us all about the place, while her mom was preparing the delicious food in the kitchen.
Compared to other restos in the area there are cheaper options, but you can't put a cost on quality as it was so worth it.

I highly recommend going on a weeknight and take advantage of happy hour drinks til 8pm. My recs are the shrimp tacos, fajitas, and the made to order guacamole! I've been going for brunch every Sunday for a year. (Never been during regular shifts, unfortunately.) The ambiance is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and nearly every item on the menu is amazing. I'm partial to the Huevos Rancheros, but pretty much everything is good. (The frijoles were the only dish that fell below their very high standard. The empanadas are delicious and the tangy sauce that comes with them is a great complement. And their coconut margaritas are addictive. I really love this place, and I am writing this during a pandemic worried about their staff and hoping it'll still be around because I have a lot of good memories over meals here. read less

They were so accomodating! They provided a family-style meal for a dozen people with dishes we hand-picked from their menu and specials. They even traveled to the venue to make it easier on us.
And the food was (and is always) DELICIOUS! We had arroz con pollo, camarones al ajillo, and their specialty costillitas en adobo. It was incredible and made for a really great way to break bread between our families for the first time.

I thought this spot was FANTASTIC - cozy, low key, unassuming, casual, and most of all, FUN! This is smack-dab in the soon-to-be (or maybe already) gentrified area of Spanish Harlem. Nothing fancy, just really laid-back and approachable. I showed up with two cousins, my best girlfriend, and her new baby who was still in a stroller. I let the staff know we had a little one on-hand, and lo and behold, they made the a fabulous corner space and pushed two tables together to seat 4 +. I thought it was SUPER thoughtful of them to accomodate ALL of us in such a small space.
Now if you like REGGATETON music, then this is your spot baby! Your girl was feelin it.
**Cocktails were a-flowin, I have to say, they made some of the best mojitos I've tasted (reminiscent of the ones I had in Havana).
**Chips and guac are a MUST.
**I was on my healthy tip, and my kale salad was excellent.
**I can't speak for the meat-eaters, but they did tell me their steak was great (check my photos).
***Total for 4 people - chips/guac appetizer, 2x drinks for everyone, and one entree each = $115. Amazing, huh!
So relaxed, so much fun. I would consider this spot a regular when I make it back to NYC! read lessAngella S.12/09/2017I'm looking for the next gem of Spanish Harlem and this place is definitely a strong, delicious contender.

On a Thursday evening around 5:30pm, my friend and I walked in and were seated immediately (no wait, yay!)
Food:
Al pastor taco (5/5 - would DEFINITELY get again)
Arroz con pollo (4/5)
Drink:
Horchata (4/5)
I would get the two dishes that I got again. Absolutely. Delicious. Al pastor taco - the meat is a flavor party in your mouth, cooked to a delightful perfection. It was soft and warm and had such a strong flavor to it. I highly recommend this dish! Arroz con pollo was so tasty too. It comes with two pieces of fried chicken sitting on a general helping of rice. Both the fried chicken and rice were satisfying.
The horchata was very refreshing, especially after the walk in the heat to the restaurant.
Service:
The staff was super friendly and very attentive. Our food came out quickly. The people working here looked happy to be here.
Ambience:
Very casual and cozy - a great place to catch up with a friend! The place never got too loud so I was able to have good conversation with my friend throughout the dinner.
Note:
-Seating is quite limited here, so if you come here later in the evening or the weekend, I would anticipate a wait.
-They have happy hour on drinks (half price on alcoholic drinks, $4 beers).
Overall:
I would definitely come here again - I think I've found a new place to show my friends from out of town for them to get a taste of Spanish Harlem! read lessJoan S.7/21/2018Cascalote is a super genuine and super friendly, Latino family run restaurant with a chilled out and very welcoming vibe.... read moreCascalote is a super genuine and super friendly, Latino family run restaurant with a chilled out and very welcoming vibe. We have been there many times and we are always treated hugely well. The first time we went together the owner gave us happy hour price drinks all night to welcome us to the area. All the waiting staff are great, really friendly and full of character. We are working our way through the menu and haven't found a bad plate yet. A place to go for some Latin home cooking and good drinks with family, friends, or even on a date. Highly recommended! read less

It's a family owned establishment, and the owner and his daughter, Nereida, go above and beyond to satisfy their patrons. Our waitress, Jennifer, was observant, attentive, and hospitable. The service is just as great as the food. Everything that comes out of the kitchen is flavorful and cooked to perfection. Como se dice "delicious" en Español? The shrimp tacos and tostaditas de salmon are my favorites. The drinks are Ahhh-mazing!! I highly recommend trying the watermelon margarita (see attached picture).

Ginnele was taking care of us and made a great impression of the business. It looked like both the front and back of the house are happy at their jobs and having as great of a time as their guests.

This is the perfect place for date night or dinner with the entire family! My husband and I love everything on the menu, but if I had to choose they'd be:
Apps:
- guac & chips (they offer mild, medium, or spicy)
- Brazilian cheese bread (so cheesy)
- nachos (so filling)
Dinner:
- the salmon (so juicy)
- chuleta Al pastor (pineapple jam pairs perfectly with the chuleta)
Drinks:
- Coconut mojito
- Mango Margarita
- henny punch
- Horchata (it's perfectly sweet)
